Geoff Tollman

Geoff was born in S.Africa in Dec. 1931 the youngest of Annie and Myer Tollman’s 6 children. At the age of 10 he was selling trees in the JNF forests having enjoyed a Zionist upbringing. Both his mother and sister Rayzelle were chair ladies of WIZO. Geoff visited Israel as a tourist for a fortnight in 1958 and remained for a month after falling in love with the country. He returned in Dec 1960 with a wife and a 1 year old daughter and went to a family Ulpan in Dora Netanya. He had visited Denmark and had catalogues, of the leading producers which he had brought for his own use when he settled down. Ulpan Friends were very interested and with time on his hands Geoff contacted one of the large Danish shippers and set up a system of Personal import with the immigrant as the importer. His first job was with Alliance the Tyre producers where he was in charge of Advertising and PR, The Danish furniture was a side line only for immigrants since there was no importation allowed then. In 1962 the Minister of commerce and industry Pinchas Sapir decided to open imports of luxury products in order to stimulate local industry. To protect the local industry he imposed a customs duty of 100% on the total landed cost.Geoff saw this as his opportunity to launch a company selling Danish furniture. Thus Danish Interiors was born. Immigrants who had chosen Danish were delighted with their choice, would Israeli’s be ready to pay double the price. In practice it proved they were.. The success of Danish Interiors was not only the beauty and quality of the product but no less display, lighting and the marketing policy. Every item was price marked at the lowest price acceptable, there were no discounts. Credibility was created and proved that transparency and top after sale service were the keys to success. We were ready to pay tax on our profits. After selling the company in 1979 and continuing to serve it for 5 years, as promised, Geoff moved on, and in 1986 with Tamara as his partner they opened Tollmans, a smaller company than Danish Interiors. The company was sold in 2005 and they are enjoying their years of retirement. Geoff is a member of a Creative Writing group and enjoys writing.. Over 30 short stories have flowed out of his pen, and his first book will be published in February “” Snatched from Death Gaby’s Story “”
